	How we thought of it

A long serpentine queue and you are at the end of it. It is a typical hot summer day and sweat is rolling down your brows. The queue inches forward and you gaze longingly at the payment counter - the focus of all your attention for the past one hour. And suddenly you are there : a wave of elation sweeps through and you release your vice like grip on that precious bill and the money and hand it over to the man at the counter. But something seems to be wrong….. The man at the counter is not even looking at you and he seems to be preparing to leave. You desperately ask him why he is not processing your bill. He gives you a sympathetic smile and points to the watch…. It is 5pm and time to close. " Come back tomorrow morning" he says. You look at him aghast; words fail you and before you can make that final desperate request he is gone. You turn around ; the line behind you has disappeared and you are the only person left standing. There is an eerie silence in the room and you look at your watch ….it is 5:10 p.m……..

You are feverishly looking through your files... It had to be there. You distinctly remember having kept the receipt there after paying your bill last Wednesday. But it is not there. You stare at the emptied file and the pile of papers that you have just gone through….It is just not possible you mutter to yourself; Where could the receipt have gone? And today is the last day for claiming reimbursement for your telephone expenses. It could not get any worse could it?… You look at your watch… There is an important meeting scheduled at 10 a.m. and searching for a lost receipt would't be the best of excuses for being late. You reluctantly pick up your briefcase and cast one last despondent look at the pile of papers . Another two thousand rupees down the drain...
